Little 500 is approaching, along with Alumni Race

Next month, IU will celebrate the 60th running of the Little 500 bicycle race. And, once again, this year the IU Student Foundation will stage alumni races for former riders to relive old glory on the track.

Bro. Don Meyer, ID ‘60, is calling on former Chi Phi riders to register for the heats, which will be divided by decade. Here is a link to the registration Web site.

Heats will be 10 laps and run from 8 a.m. to noon April 24 at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Those interested should register now, because races are expected to fill quickly.

Iota Delta has lost a charter member

From Brother Joe Goeller:

David L. Engel Obituary

Rest in Peace

Some sad news, via Brother Todd Hoover.

Brother Mark Asmar died in a Boston hospital in September while awaiting a heart transplant. Asmar was an attorney and former Iota Delta president. He lived in Connecticut.

A link to his obituary is here.

Rest in peace and God’s speed, Bro. Asmar.

Grocery shopping raises money for the chapter

Iota Delta brothers who shop at Kroger can help raise money for the chapter. It is free and costs participants nothing.

Participants receive a Kroger card and every time they reload the card Iota Delta receives 5%. The card can be used to purchase groceries, prescriptions, even gas. Chi Phi brothers can use the card, as well as family members and friends. The money received from Kroger is held in the Iota Delta Chapter Excellence fund.

Thanks to all the Iota Delta brothers and friends who continue to use their cards. We just received our third check from Kroger.

To get a card and start helping the cause, contact Dan Bowden at dbowden@talktotucker.com, or Larry Flaten at lmf@telspan.com.

Wonderful News!!

Brothers,

Iota Delta officials were able to refinance the mortgage on the house and avoid a sheriff’s sale. A full briefing is available in the Member’s Only site.

Kevin Gfell: 1979-2009

Today Brother Kevin Gfell was laid to rest in New Haven, Ind. Many family members and friends were present, including more Chi Phi brothers that I had ever seen outside of Bloomington. Alumni traveled from as far away as San Francisco and New York for the funeral and I suspect more will be in attendance Saturday at the memorial service in Indianapolis.

The size of the group made it obvious how many people Gfell touched in his all-too-short life. Although I was not among his closest friends, it was a privilege and an honor to call him “brother.”

We are all better people because we knew him. As the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi says: “Lord make me an instrument of Thy grace … Where there is hatred, let me show love … Where there is sadness, joy.”

Gfell was an instrument of His grace — he left us all with love and joy.

Rest in peace.

Note: If you haven’t already, leave your memories of Kevin after this post or the others below. Feel free to read what others have written. The outpouring of love is truly overwhelming.

Help Gfell’s friends preserve memories

Friends of Brother Kevin Gfell are building a scrapbook of pictures and stories about him. Friends can e-mail their stories to: remembergfell@gmail.com.

Photos should be sent to: remembergfell.photos@picasaweb.com if you have a gmail account. If the pictures are coming from somewhere else, send them to the remembergfell@gmail.com account.

Brother Andy Stone also has made the online photo album publicly viewable. It is available here.

For those who don’t already know, comments and memories can be posted here or at any of the posts below. Some that I have read are really wonderful.

Note: Gfell’s obituary is now on the Fort Wayne Newspapers Web site, which handles the Journal Gazette and News-Sentinel. It also has a guest book feature, which you may sign.

Another note: For those of you coming to Fort Wayne from Indianapolis or other areas, please be careful if you are driving. Northeast Indiana is expecting blizzard conditions Wednesday and wind chills as low as -15 degrees, snow Thursday and very cold temperatures Friday. The latest forecast is here.

Preservation efforts

Installing the Chi Phi Badge

There is a project underway to take all our old scrapbooks from the 1950s and 60s and make them digital images, so they are preserved for posterity. The goal is to take pictures of all the pages and put them on CD. Brothers Joe Goeller and Arnie Applegate are working on it. Here is a sample of what they have so far.

Goeller wants to put the entire scrapbook here once it’s complete. It likely will appear in the members-only section, with excepts on the front page.
