More Kroger News

According to Bro. Larry Flaten, the chapter just received its fourth check from the Kroger program.

Participants receive a Kroger card and every time they reload the card Iota Delta receives 3 percent. The card can be used to purchase groceries, prescriptions, even gas. Chi Phi brothers can use the card, as well as family members and friends. The money received from Kroger is held in the Iota Delta Chapter Excellence fund.

Thanks to all the Iota Delta brothers and friends who continue to use their cards.

To get a card and start helping the cause, contact Dan Bowden at dbowden@talktotucker.com, or Larry Flaten at lmf@telspan.com.

Iota Delta Remembers Jack P. McNutt 1930-2009

The following note comes from Brother Dan Bowden:
Brothers,

Some of you know the McNutts, and some do not. For those of you who do not know them, Gary, Randy and Dan were all Chi Phi’s at IU, and I believe that both Gary and Randy were Alphas during the 80’s. Their father died on January 28. Visitation Sunday, 02/01 in Broad Ripple. Following is a link to his obituary.

Jack P. McNutt

Hug the ones you love,

Dan Bowden ‘76

As a postscript, Jack and Lucille McNutt were close friends of Chi Phi for many years, starting in the 1970’s, serving as officers of the Parents Club during that time.  Sons and Brothers Gary ‘79, Randy ‘81, and Dan ‘86 have  been involved as successful Chapter leaders and on Little 500 teams.

At the 25th Anniversary on November 5th, 1983, Lucille spoke at the Banquet of their ties to Iota Delta, in part, ”Over the years, Chi Phi has been a part of our family life. …The one fact that always came through from all three sons was the men of the House. They liked the quality of the men who lived here.  That means a lot to a parent. …”

“Those of us who have had the opportunity to watch the House progress over the last 7 to 10 years have taken great pride in the part our sons have played in making the House what it is today – the Best on the Bloomington Campus!  … “

“We are here to help when you need us, or when you want us … We are proud to say to our friends and others, I’m the mother or father of a Chi Phi Man!”

With sincere sympathy to Lucille, Gary, Randy, Dan, and the McNutt family -

Joe Goeller ‘63

In Memoriam: Kevin Gfell

The Iota Delta community is mourning the loss of Brother Kevin Gfell, Iota Delta class of 2001. He passed away Jan. 10.

Gfell was a fine active and alumni member. He was a member of the house’s Little 500 team, including the team that finished in third place in 1999. He also was a member of the alumni association board and an important part of efforts to save the chapter this past year.

Gfell grew up in New Haven and was living in Indianapolis. After finishing his undergraduate degree at IU, he graduated from the IU Law School at Indianapolis in 2004. He was practicing at Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman at the time of his death.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Services are expected to be Friday, Jan. 16 in Fort Wayne. More information will be posted here when it is available.

Those who knew him are shocked and saddened. He was a wonderful person and a credit to Chi Phi. Feel free to post your memories of Kevin in the comment section.

We all miss him. Rest in peace and God’s speed.

50th is approaching…

This is just a reminder to make your reservations for the Iota Delta chapter’s 50th anniversary celebration. A full weekend of events is planned beginning Friday, Sept. 26. It includes attending the IU-Michigan State football game, a tour of the house and new wing, a banquet at the Indiana Memorial Union, as well as an update on the current state of the chapter.

A committee of chapter alumni also will present a proposal for a new house ownership structure. After it was decided the house at 1400 N. Jordan Ave. would be rented to another fraternity last semester, the group formed with the idea of creating a set-up where more brothers, active and alumni, could take ownership of the house. They have been working since Little 500 to formulate plans that hopefully could ensure the long-term future of Iota Delta.

We hope to see you all at the celebration. More information, including registration materials, is available in the members-only section.

Also, the committee is always is looking for legal and financial expertise to help formulate a workable plan. If you are willing to help, e-mail: iustone@gmail.com.

Expect a letter in the mail

Brother Tom Walls, a fellow Fort Wayne resident, has been the keeper of the alumni newsletter for some time. When the chapter’s problems surfaced, the latest newsletter was put on hold.

Walls told me his is about to send out the latest edition. It includes an update on the current state of affairs for all of you who aren’t up to speed.

Expect to receive the letter in the mail soon. An electronic version also will be posted on this site, likely on the message board.
