Update on services for Kevin Gfell

More details to come, but it looks like there will be services in Fort Wayne (see post below) as well as a memorial in Indianapolis for those who can’t make it to Fort Wayne.

More details when they become available. You can post memories in the comments section here or the post below.

In Memoriam: Kevin Gfell

The Iota Delta community is mourning the loss of Brother Kevin Gfell, Iota Delta class of 2001. He passed away Jan. 10.

Gfell was a fine active and alumni member. He was a member of the house’s Little 500 team, including the team that finished in third place in 1999. He also was a member of the alumni association board and an important part of efforts to save the chapter this past year.

Gfell grew up in New Haven and was living in Indianapolis. After finishing his undergraduate degree at IU, he graduated from the IU Law School at Indianapolis in 2004. He was practicing at Hall, Render, Killian, Heath & Lyman at the time of his death.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Services are expected to be Friday, Jan. 16 in Fort Wayne. More information will be posted here when it is available.

Those who knew him are shocked and saddened. He was a wonderful person and a credit to Chi Phi. Feel free to post your memories of Kevin in the comment section.

We all miss him. Rest in peace and God’s speed.

Preservation efforts

Installing the Chi Phi Badge

There is a project underway to take all our old scrapbooks from the 1950s and 60s and make them digital images, so they are preserved for posterity. The goal is to take pictures of all the pages and put them on CD. Brothers Joe Goeller and Arnie Applegate are working on it. Here is a sample of what they have so far.

Goeller wants to put the entire scrapbook here once it’s complete. It likely will appear in the members-only section, with excepts on the front page.

Photos from 50th

A slide slow from the 50th anniversary celebration now is available on the members-only site. A link is in the column to the right.

A power point presentation about ideas for a new housing corporation also will be posted soon. Check back soon for updates.

Nostalgia

Remember calling Pizza Express at 3 a.m. for a “Big 10″ (large pizza, two orders of bread sticks and two drinks)? Well, it won’t be called that anymore because of legal issues.

Check out this story from the Indianapolis Business Journal.

Moving Day

As most of you know, a few alums removed the chapter’s personal, private items from the house earlier this summer. Brother Joe Goeller took photos and made a slide show of them. I have posted the link on the member’s only page.

Tickets for 50th are still available. Forms are on the member’s only page as well.

50th is approaching…

This is just a reminder to make your reservations for the Iota Delta chapter’s 50th anniversary celebration. A full weekend of events is planned beginning Friday, Sept. 26. It includes attending the IU-Michigan State football game, a tour of the house and new wing, a banquet at the Indiana Memorial Union, as well as an update on the current state of the chapter.

A committee of chapter alumni also will present a proposal for a new house ownership structure. After it was decided the house at 1400 N. Jordan Ave. would be rented to another fraternity last semester, the group formed with the idea of creating a set-up where more brothers, active and alumni, could take ownership of the house. They have been working since Little 500 to formulate plans that hopefully could ensure the long-term future of Iota Delta.

We hope to see you all at the celebration. More information, including registration materials, is available in the members-only section.

Also, the committee is always is looking for legal and financial expertise to help formulate a workable plan. If you are willing to help, e-mail: iustone@gmail.com.

50th Plans Set

The Iota Delta Chapter’s 50th anniversary is approaching quickly. I have posted the registration form and information on the members-only site in case any of you did not receive the e-mails about it.

Here are the basics: the celebration is planned for Sept. 26-28 in Bloomington. The agenda includes checking out the new wing of the house, attending the IU-Michigan State football game and a banquette at the Indiana Memorial Union. A block of hotel rooms has been reserved at the IMU hotel for those who need them.

Check out the message board for more.

Similar models

For those of you who were at the house during Little 500, you heard some of the ideas the group has to save the house.

Brother Dan Baratz, who is helping research the viability of the ownership idea, forwarded this link. It is about a TKE chapter at Iowa State that is trying a similar model to save its chapter and house.

One thing to remember when reading about the TKE situation: Because of the nature of the model they are using, the number of investors they are allowed is limited. That means the investment amount they must charge is higher than what our group is considering.

Expect a letter in the mail

Brother Tom Walls, a fellow Fort Wayne resident, has been the keeper of the alumni newsletter for some time. When the chapter’s problems surfaced, the latest newsletter was put on hold.

Walls told me his is about to send out the latest edition. It includes an update on the current state of affairs for all of you who aren’t up to speed.

Expect to receive the letter in the mail soon. An electronic version also will be posted on this site, likely on the message board.
